Each operating system has its own pros and cons, far too many to go into detail with now. As an example, if you ask a systems engineer to setup your web server with a standard LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP) that is what you will get. But does your website need everything you get with a standard install, as you will probably agree the more you have installed, the more processing power, memory and hard disk space is used. You are always better to have a minimal install and then install exactly what you need.
