Firewalls are neglected by a lot of companies. Without a firewall, you shouldn't be surprised that your website may have been hacked and all your traffic and customer data is freely accessible to the entire world. A firewall is an essential part of your hosting. Think of it from this point of view, your firewall should be locked down to everyone and everything. We advise not allowing FTP access and only SSH (post 22) into your server from selected IP Addresses. If you do not have a fix IP address you can always open the server to a small range if IPs.

The above method will prevent access to your server making it a lot more secure than by default. Now you have resoved the access to your server, we also advise blocking ICMP requests via ping. The reason for this is to give the impression to hackers that the server is not up. You will find that ping requests are made from all over the world, as soon as a ping request comes back as true the hacker will then attempt hundreds of different posts every second with thousands of various usernames and passwords.

The amount of times we find users passwords to be there name, surname or even 'password' itself is quite scary. When creating a password you need to make it obsure, include both numbers, letters, uppercase and lowercase and additional characters like '$%^&*()' etc. An excellent password is something like 'sdf345GWS%^Sfg#DSF', it is completely random and the change of it being guested is millions to one.
